Lead Genomic Data Scientist - Diversity!
If you strongly believe in equity in genomic healthcare and want to be at the cutting-edge intersection of science, healthcare and technology then this is the role for you. We are looking for a Lead Genome Data Scientist for an exciting new programme to tackle the lack of diversity in genomic datasets. Many personalised medicine findings only apply to European ancestry groups because those are the genomic datasets that have been used for research. The goal is to make the National Genomic Research Library as diverse as the UK population.
As lead genomic data scientist you will have a leading role in shaping and delivering the analytics arm of this programme. You will work with a small group of genomics data scientists and other teams, as well as internal and external stakeholders to:
Ensure high relevance and excellent standards of genomic analysis,
Create tools, including developing, prototyping, and validating new features for genome analysis to enable better diagnostics, clinical management and research in underrepresented populations,
Develop bioinformatics datasets and resources to enable downstream analyses,
Communicate with stakeholders, in particular the research and clinical community, to ensure the relevance to planned analysis, tools and results.
Skills and Experience for Success
It's essential for this role that you have:
A background in statistical genetics, statistical bioinformatics, biostatistics, or a related strongly quantitative discipline, with postdoctoral experience in fields related to statistical genetics or genomics,
Experience in human population genetics or genetic epidemiology, ideally with a focus on diverse populations (e.g. ancestry inference, genetic mapping in stratified populations, polygenic risk scores in diverse populations, etc),
Strong programming skills (e.g. Python, R) and experience with cloud-scale data processing and high-performance computing,
Deep understanding and hands-on experience of a broad range of bioinformatic techniques and approaches, especially related to whole genome sequencing,
Deep and demonstrable commitment to equity in healthcare, along with a solid understanding of the disadvantages presented by a lack of diversity in the genomic and health data space,
Experience in successfully leading a genomic research project from its inception to deliverables, demonstrated e.g. by a good publication record.
It would also be highly desirable that you have:
Excellent analytical and reporting skills,
Self-motivation, with excellent ability to work on your own initiative,
Ability to inspire and motivate other members of the team, deliver to deadlines, and focus on delivery-oriented data-driven strategical decisions,
Demonstrable 'Intellectual courage' which enables collaboration with experts in fields other than your own and developing innovative ways of data analysis.
PhD and at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience, or equivalent experience, in at least one of the following: Genetics/Genomic with a strong computational component, Statistical genetics, Genetic epidemiology, Bioinformatics with the focus on human genomics
In return the client offers,
30 days holiday
generous pension scheme
individual learning budgets for every colleague
a raft of other benefits
This is an exciting and challenging role which will require strong technical abilities. Our client is offering a competitive package, with excellent benefits and career progression.
