Healthcare PR

Public relations is the arm of healthcare communications which primarily deals with the media, including trade and consumer publications, broadcast (TV and radio) and more recently, social media channels. Healthcare PR covers everything from writing press material, dealing with media enquiries and creating patient awareness campaigns, to media launches for new products or clinical data, and issues management.

Healthcare PR covers everything from writing press material, dealing with media enquiries and creating patient awareness campaigns, to media launches for new products or clinical data, and issues management.

As with other related communication disciplines, healthcare PR is a very specialised field, and requires a keen understanding of the many regulations and guidelines that activities must comply with. This sets healthcare PR apart from other public relations roles.

Healthcare PR is used in all aspects of the healthcare product lifecycle. It can be used to share research successes prior to a product’s launch, create a buzz around its entry to the market and also tackle any adverse issues which may arise during the product’s lifecycle.

On a day-to-day basis, healthcare PR roles are very varied and candidates need to work both proactively and reactively, when required. For example, journalist enquiries need to be dealt with swiftly to meet print or broadcast deadlines. Successful PR professionals have excellent communication skills, and will be able to turn complex, technical information into engaging copy for the media and consumers.

Bigger pharma companies often employ PR professionals directly as part of a wider communications team, others prefer to use specialist PR agencies. So for candidates, this means there is a variety of roles available either based inhouse or agency. Agency roles tend to be very fast-paced and roles involve working on a number of different accounts, whereas inhouse positions focus on one particular company and its products.

Typical jobs in a PR agency start at account executive and account manager, and progress onto account director and associate director. Salaries for entry level positions start at £25,000 while more senior positions would be somewhere in the region of £75,000 and beyond. Inhouse roles also range from entry level positions to director level. The salaries, benefits and employee perks can vary from agency to agency.
