While Paramount Recruitment has only just opened an office in the USA, the business is no stranger to working stateside. In fact, James Luterbacher, Associate Director for Healthcare Communications, has been successfully filling vacancies for American clients for more than 18 months – and all from his desk in Birmingham, England.
Here, James explains why he, and his British approach, is a hit in the USA:
When I first joined Paramount in 2014, I was tasked with helping to establish the agency in new territories in Europe, the US and the rest of the world. It was a big challenge, but as an ambitious chap, it was one I was happy to accept.
Our business in the US grew organically at first. A few of my clients in the UK started asking about whether we could help them fill job openings across the pond and I was keen to help. These few initial enquiries soon snowballed into something much bigger and our network of contacts in the US healthcare communications and genomics sectors has grown rapidly in the last few years. So much so that Paramount has tripled its stateside business in the last 12 months alone.
Not bad when you consider this was all done from a desk in Birmingham!
Of course, in the early days when we were building up our portfolio in the US there were a few challenges to working remotely with our American clients and candidates, mainly the time difference – even on the East Coast, we are working with a 5-hour time difference. Thankfully, with the technology available to us and good time management, this has never been an issue.
With the second office in Boston, I can now base myself in both the US and the UK, and be more available to candidates and clients when they need me.
Our new American base is also helping me to offer more opportunities to the experienced candidates I meet in the US. Paramount has been very successful in the UK at building our global reach and we have accrued many years of experience working with people of various nationalities and cultures, and relocating candidates to Singapore and Australia, as well as throughout Europe. With us now operating from the US permanently, American candidates can access these kinds of vacancies too.
I think more and more people are choosing Paramount in the US because we aren’t pushy and we value getting the right appointment over getting the quickest recruitment. We understand our markets, the people we are working with and who will add value in the long term. Our capabilities apply to every organisation from fast-growing start-ups to global companies, and even clients that don’t know what they need! We see ourselves as a partner to our clients and work alongside them to get positions filled to their timelines, whether that’s days or weeks.
I think perhaps the recruitment approach is quite different in the UK. We are open and thorough, and its important to us that our clients and candidates enjoy their experience with us regardless of whether a hire is made at the end of it all. That’s why Paramount offers candidates impartial career advice and don’t put them forward for jobs we know aren’t right for them. We want to help them with their working journey. Although it’s a bigger investment of time up front for us, it pays dividends in the long run in stronger relationships and great hires which stay in post for longer.
That’s not to say that I think we have it all figured out! I think we can certainly learn more about the way the US recruitment market works and where we need to adapt our approach. I’m always looking for new things we can do to become more integrated into the community, particularly in New York and Boston.
In November, I came and spent some time in the US with three of my Paramount colleagues – including Jade Page, our genomics expert – meeting clients and candidates in person, and we all had a fantastically productive week. So much so, we are already looking forward to coming again in the New Year.
With the new office opening in Boston, I believe Paramount has a real opportunity to bring our British flavour of recruitment to the US, add value to the recruitment market here and really establish our presence as a global agency.
